Grenade attack on Mehbooba's rally; 1 dead, 9 hurt

Srinagar: Stepping up attacks, militants today (April 25, 2004) hurled a grenade at a People's Democratic Party (PDP) election rally minutes after party chief Mehbooba Mufti left the venue, killing one person and injuring nine in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The attack took place in Khool-Noorabad shortly after Mufti, who is contesting from Anantnag Parliamentary seat, left the rally venue and the crowd was dispersing, Inspector General of Police K Ranjendra said.

Ten people, including NDTV cameraman S Tariq, were injured in the blast, he said, adding that one of them later succumbed to injuries.

Mufti had already left the place and was safe, the IG said.
