Ghatkopar blast: CID to file status report on accused Sunday, April 25 2004 15:15 Hrs (IST)
Mumbai:
In keeping with a Bombay High Court directive, the State CID (Central Investigative Department) would file on April 28 a status report on its probe into the mysterious disappearance of Ghatkopar bomb blast accused Sayed Khwaja Yunus from police custody.
In a related development, assistant police inspector Sachin Vaze, arrested on the charge of alleged murder of Yunus, has urged for bail in a special court on the ground that he had to appear for computer examinations and would co-operate with the investigations if he was granted liberty.
The court has asked prosecution to file its reply to Vaze's bail petition. Earlier, a lower court disposed of Vaze's bail plea and asked him to move the special court.
Hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by father of the accused, Khwaja Ayub, Justice S Radhakrishna and Justice R S Mohite on April 20 allowed Asiya Begam to become petitioner in place of her husband as he died of cardiac failure two days back.
Earlier, the court had come down heavily on CID for "shoddy" investigations into the mysterious disappearance of Yunus from police custody. The court had asked the CID to record a fresh FIR on the basis of the statement given by co-accused Mateen before a special court alleging that he had witnessed police assault on Yunus during interrogation.
The State CID alleged that Yunus had died in custody due to police assault while crime branch claimed that he escaped when a police jeep taking him to Ahmednagar for probe met with an accident near Pune on January seven last year.
