Srinagar polls peaceful; no violence recorded Monday, April 26 2004 19:18 Hrs (IST)
Srinagar:
It was all smiles for the Jammu and Kashmir Police at the end of the polls for Srinagar-Budgam Parliamentary constituency when negligible violence was registered as compared to the first phase in Baramulla which saw stepped-up militancy which left four dead.
Relaxing in the control room was Director General of State Police Gopal Sharma and his second-in-command Inspector General (Kashmir range) K Rajendra Kumar after a day-long of vigil in entire prestigious Parliamentary constituency from where National Conference President Omar Abdullah is in fray.
"I am hopeful that the third phase of Anantnag on May 5 would also pass off peacefully," Sharma said.
Barring hurling of three grenades in which a girl was injured, this constituency witnessed no other violence though the turnout remained less than 20 per cent.
"We are keeping our fingers crossed for the third phase," Sharma said.
The Baramulla constituency had witnessed widespread militant violence during the first phase in which four persons were killed.
