Absconding doctors in Bilkis case surrender Wednesday, April 28 2004 13:03 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
The two absconding doctors in the Bilkis Yakub gang rape cum massacre case, who were chargesheeted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), have surrendered before a court in Ahmedabad, CBI sources said today (Apr 28, 2004).
The duo, Dr Arun Kumar and his wife Dr Sangeeta Prasad, surrendered before the chief judicial magistrate in Ahmedabad last evening, who remanded them to judicial custody till April 30.
CBI had filed a chargesheet on April 19 against 20 persons including the two doctors.
The agency had alleged that the medics had "not performed properly" the post-mortem of the victims killed in mob fury in village Panivela near Ahmedabad.
The court, while sending the two doctors to judicial remand directed the investigating officer of the CBI to remain present on April 30 when their remand expires, sources said, adding the agency would try to seek their custodial remand then.
The CBI also alleged that the doctors did not conduct any test on Bilkis who was five-months pregnant at the time of the incident. Bilkis had claimed that she was raped.
As many as 14 people were killed by an angry mob on the intervening night of March 3-4, 2002 in the post-Godhra riots. Bilkis is among three survivors of the mob wrath.
