Guj riots: Relatives of UK citizens seek damages Friday, April 30 2004 23:03 Hrs (IST)

Relatives of two British citizens, who were allegedly killed in post-Godhra communal riots in Sabarkantha district in North Gujarat, today (Apr 30, 2004) filed a civil suit in Himmatnagar court seeking damages worth Rs 22 crore from the Gujarat Government, sources said in Ahmedabad.
The suit claiming damage was filed by Sheeren Dawood and Samima Dawood, the widows of the riot victims and another kin Imran Mohammed Salim Dawood, sources said.
The claimants have made Chief Minister Narendra Modi, the then Minister of State for Home Gordhan Zadafiya and 12 others party to the suit, the sources said.
The civil judge in Himmatnagar has admitted the suit and fixed May 6 as the date for hearing.
According to police, on Feburary 28, 2002, a rioting mob had intercepted the four-wheeler in which these two UK nationals were travelling near Prantij town of the district and allegedly charred them to death.
The driver of the vehicle was seriously injured.
The victims were on their way to Surat from Jaipur in Rajasthan when the incident occurred.
