'Peace not possible till Musharraf is in power' Sunday, May 2 2004 21:01 Hrs (IST)
Islamabad:
For all his anger and antagonism towards Pakistan, Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray thinks that India and Pakistan are conjoined twins but strongly believes that peace will not prevail between the two until President Pervez Musharraf continues in power.
In a rare interview to a Pakistani TV channel, he said he would not go to Pakistan even if Musharraf invited him.
The two countries were conjoined twins about whom doctors wonder how to separate and keep both of them alive, cartoonist-turned politician Thackeray said in the interview to Geo TV telecast today (May 2, 2004).
He was asked how he visualised India and Pakistan if he were to draw a cartoon lampooning the enmity between the two countries.
During the 30-minute interview, he welcomed Pakistan cricket team's visit to India, answered questions on Indo-Pak relations and about Muslims in India.
He attacked Musharraf for terming the militants in Kashmir as freedom fighters.
"Since Musharraf says that the militants are freedom fighters and denies any involvement of Pakistan in militancy in Jammu and Kashmir, the Pakistan President should not 'shout' foul when the Indian troops shoot down the militants."
"There can never be peace between the two counties until Musharraf continues in power," he said.
On the peace initiatives taken by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to improve relations, he said they were all "cosmetic". He termed the current peace process as "wrong".
