The car in which Ahmed was travelling collided head on with a truck killing the 48-year old Congress leader along with his driver and gunman on the spot, Sharma added.

Ahmed had served as Union Minister in P V Narasimha Rao Government at the Centre in 1993. He was first elected to Rajya Sabha in 1988 and returned to the Upper House in 2002.

Ahmed joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for a brief period a few years back but soon returned to Congress.

Ahmed, who leaves behind wife, a son and a daughter, was appointed as PCC working president mainly to improve the party's equation with minorities. He had been travelling extensively in the State in the last few days in this regard.

He had unsuccessfully contested Lok Sabha elections against BJP's Vasundhara Raje from Jhalawar.
