14-days JC to surrendered cops in Bilkis Banu case Tuesday, May 4 2004 14:25 Hrs (IST)

Two Gujarat policemen, who surrendered before a local court today (May 4, 2004), in connection with the Bilkis Banu alleged gang rape cum murder case of the post-Godhra communal riots in which 14 persons were killed, were sent to Judicial Custody till May 18.
The court, however granted exemption till May 14 to two other policemen of Deputy Superintendent rank from appearing before it due to "medical reasons".
Retired Police Sub-inspector B R Patel and a former head constable Somabhai Ghori surrendered before the Chief Judicial Magistrate and were sent to judicial custody at the Sabarmati central jail.
With this four Gujarat policemen, two doctors and 14 others that includes a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader from Dahod have fallen into Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) dragnet so far, while the fate of the two Dy SP's is still hanging loose as they have also filed an affidavit before the Gujarat High court to "quash proceedings against them".
