'Humans can unravel the truth of various planets'
Tuesday, May 4 2004 16:44 Hrs (IST)

Indian-origin NASA scientist Prasun Desai
Ahmedabad: Prasun Desai, a senior aerospace engineer with NASA who was part of the 50-member team in-charge of the crucial descend of 'Spirit and Opportunity', the twin Robot Rovers that landed on planet Mars believes that "humans have the potential to unravel the truth" of various planets.

"The truth is out there and humans have the potential to unravel it", said Desai, who is currently vacationing at his ancestral home at a remote village in Anand district of Gujarat.

Desai worked at NASA's (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) Langley Research Centre in the US for the mammoth multi-million Dollar project.

"I was part of the team that was responsible for the proper landing of the spacecrafts carrying both the Rovers and we had to ensure that the touchdown was perfect so that the Rovers could disembark and begin their work without any hitches," Desai told reporters.

"Scores of calculations, trajectory of the spacecraft, parachute design, sequence of events and all our study in aerospace had to be coordinated accurately to ensure that the spaceship enters Mars' hemisphere slowly as it was travelling at a speed of around 22,000 kms per hour and we had to bring it down to zero," the scientist who is completing his PhD in aerospace studies from University of Illionis said.

He said it took the signal from their station on earth 10 minutes to reach the spacecraft, which took six minutes to land after entering Mars' hemisphere, so it had already landed on the red planet by the time the signal reached during landing.
