Cong, Communists two sides of the same coin: PM
Tuesday, May 4 2004 22:45 Hrs (IST)

Kolkata: Taking the electoral fight to the home turf of West Bengal's ruling Left Front, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee tonight (May 4, 2004) dubbed Congress and communists as "two sides of the same coin" and slammed both for trying to stop the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) from returning to power in the Lok Sabha polls.

"Attempts are being made to form a Front against us, but we are gaining in strength continuously," the Prime Minister told an election rally in Calcutta South Lok Sabha constituency where Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee is seeking re-election.

"Congress and communists are two sides of the same coin," Vajpayee said in his first election meeting in the State.

The Prime Minister said hectic activities were on and "attempts" were being made to see that the NDA was stopped from getting a majority in the coming elections.

"They are trying to prevent the NDA from forming a Government again even if it gets majority," he said.

"Do these parties have a common programme except for opposing the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) and the Trinamool Congress?" Vajpayee asked, adding these parties had a one-point programme and that was to stop the NDA from forming the Government at the Centre.
