'Many constituents of NDA will switch allegiance' Wednesday, May 5 2004 22:02 Hrs (IST)
Bhopal:
Predicting the disintegration of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) after declaration of Lok Sabha poll results, Congress today (May 5, 2004) claimed that many constituents of the ruling coalition would switch their allegiance to it for formation of a Government led by it.
"The days of the NDA are numbered as many of its constituent parties will desert BJP as soon as the Lok Sabha poll results are declared," Congress Working Committee (CWC) member and party in-charge of Madhya Pradesh, Prithviraj Chauhan, told reporters at the end of the penultimate phase of elections.
He said regional parties would automatically join hands with Congress for Government formation as they have lost ground due to "wrong" policies followed by the NDA.
Even the BJP has realised that the NDA would not be able to muster enough strength to retain power at the Centre and has started searching for new partners, he said, adding "the search has also proved to be futile".
Chauhan claimed that Congress would substantially improve its performance over the 1999 elections following the entry of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi into active politics, which has infused a whiff of fresh air among rural populace.
About Madhya Pradesh, the senior Congress leader said the party would perform better than expected.
BJP on the other hand claimed that it would bag all the 12 seats in the State that went to polls today improving its 1999 position of nine seats.
