Cong fumes over 'objectionable' graphic of Priyanka Thursday, May 6 2004 20:16 Hrs (IST)
Mumbai:
Youth Congress activists today (May 6, 2004) burnt copies of a leading financial daily to protest against an "objectionable" computer graphic of Priyanka Gandhi, depicted as a pop icon donning a Western apparel.
The activists held a demonstration at Dadar in Central Mumbai and raised slogans against the newspaper for carrying such portrayal of the Congress leader.
"The graphic is objectionable as it depicts Priyanka in a mini skirt which is very much against our cultural value. Such a portrayal of a member of the Gandhi family will not be tolerated. We have demanded action against the paper," a Congress spokesperson said today.
The paper in its yesterday's edition had carried a graphic of Priyanka in a Britney Spears attire crooning away in the pop icon's style.
The accompanying caption "We Will We Will Rock You" mentions about the youth, numbering of 150 million voters between 18-25 and forming 25 per cent of the electorate.
Titled "Polling Stones of the Election Rock", a small write-up describes politicians, including Jyotiraditya Scindia and Varun Gandhi, as part of the band and refers to Priyanka Gandhi as "...the answer to Britney Spears - the gorgeous Priyanka Gandhi".
It also alludes to Rahul Gandhi as -"on-the-drums is baba-in-the woods".
Earlier this week, Congress workers had burnt copies of a Marathi weekly 'Chitralekha' for printing "superimposed" photographs of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani.
