"I have resigned from the post of the Prime Minister to pave way for bringing about national consensus to resolve the political crisis facing the country," Thapa said in a live telecast in the State-run Nepal Television.

The resignation comes amidst mounting pressure from major political parties, which have been launching agitations for the past five weeks demanding restoration of full-fledged democracy and formation of an all-party Government.

Thapa, a loyalist of King Gyanendra, was appointed Prime Minister on June 4, 2003.
