Nepal PM Thapa resigns to defuse political crisis Friday, May 7 2004 15:49 Hrs (IST)
Kathmandu:
Nepal's Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa resigned today (May 7, 2004) in an effort to defuse the political crisis in the Himalayan Kingdom.
"I have resigned from the post of the Prime Minister to pave way for bringing about national consensus to resolve the political crisis facing the country," Thapa said in a live telecast in the State-run Nepal Television.
The resignation comes amidst mounting pressure from major political parties, which have been launching agitations for the past five weeks demanding restoration of full-fledged democracy and formation of an all-party Government.
Thapa, a loyalist of King Gyanendra, was appointed Prime Minister on June 4, 2003.
