Further revelations on Army men faking killings
Saturday, May 8 2004 21:17 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: In further revelations relating to the expose of some Army personnel faking killings of enemy soldiers on the world's highest battlefield Siachen glacier, reports today (May 8, 2004) came out that the officer in the eye of the storm, Maj Surinder Singh, had been recommended by his commanding officer for a Vir Chakra which was later sought to be changed to Sena Medal.

However, the move was nipped in the bud, when the Commander of the 102 Brigade, Brigadier H S Bedi, put his foot down and did not forward the medal citation to the higher command chain.

The Brigade Commander, in fact, pulled up the Gorkha battalion Commander for not informing him about details of the Major's "operational misdemeanour" and recommended to his senior officers for action.

The 14 Corp Commander Lt Gen Arvind Sharma, in his directions issued on February 3, on submission of the court of inquiry report, has directed disciplinary action against Major Singh for submitting false film on fake kills and against Col K D Singh for failing to inform senior officers of the Major faking encounters.

The Corp Commander also cited instances coming to light of the Colonel creating unauthorised funds and taking blank railway leave warrants.
