'Who should be PM: Erudite Vajpayee or naive Sonia?' Saturday, May 8 2004 21:03 Hrs (IST)
Chennai:
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) leader Jayalalithaa today (May 8, 2004) wound up her two month long campaign for the Lok Sabha polls by reiterating that only an Indian should become Prime Minister and not someone of foreign origin.
Ending her campaign at Kotturpuram area of the city this afternoon, Jayalalithaa said the issue before the electorate was who should become the Prime Minister -- an experienced and responsible person like A B Vajpayee or an inexperienced person like AICC (All India Congress Committee) president Sonia Gandhi.
Attacking the Congress president, Jayalalithaa said that Sonia Gandhi had remained an Italian citizen for 15 years, even after marriage to Rajiv Gandhi. "Only when she became aware that Rajiv Gandhi will become Prime Minister did she take Indian citizenship. She was ashamed to be called an Indian citizen and is now aspiring to become Prime Minister."
She described the Democratic Progressive Alliance as an 'opportunistic' one and alleged that DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) president M Karunanidhi had 'betrayed' the State's interests over the Cauvery water issue.
If Tamil Nadu were to progress further, then Vajpayee, who had promised all help to enable the State attain the top position in the country, should become Prime Minister.
On Karunanidhi's remarks that Chennai would not get water from Veeranam lake in Cuddalore district, she said the lake had received water due to good rains. In a few days, Chennai would 'definitely' receive water.
"I will definitely fulfil this promise", she said adding that a permanent solution for the water problem in Chennai would be found, for which Vajpayee had promised all help.
