Sunday, May 9 2004 19:33 Hrs (IST)

London: Murdered 'Wall Street Journal' reporter Daniel Pearl knew for several hours that he was about to be killed, but resisted repeated attempts to sedate him, the interrogation of new suspects by Pakistan police has found.

Pearl, who was kidnapped in Karachi in January 2002 was fully aware of what was happening when militants took control of him in his final days, the 'Telegraph' reported from Karachi quoting information gleaned from Pakistani militants now in police custody.

Officers have been told that shocking video films of Pearl's murder was in fact a partial reconstruction as the camera operator made a mistake and missed the moment of his death, which his murderers then re-enacted before decapitating him.

According to the arrested men, Pearl was held for two weeks before he was killed but made at least one escape attempt.

"He tried to scale the wall but could not do it because both his hands were tied," one told police.

Eventually, Saud Memon, who is believed to be al-Qaeda's chief financer in Pakistan, contacted a group of extremists who took over custody and decided he would be killed.

Before he was murdered, they forced him to relate his Jewish background and express sympathy with Guantanamo Bay prisoners before putting the knife to his throat once and then again owing to the faulty camera, the report added.
