CET sharing: Cabinet sub-panel favours 75:25 ratio Monday, May 10 2004 20:22 Hrs (IST)
Bangalore:
The Cabinet sub-committee set up by the Karnataka Government to suggest a formula for sharing of seats in private professional colleges during 2004-'05 academic has recommended maintaining of previous year's status quo of 75:25 ratio.
The meeting decided to suggest to the Government that like last year it shall have a say in filling up 75 per cent of the total sanctioned intake leaving the remaining 25 per cent to managements, Minister for Medical Education Dr A B Maalaka Raddy, who heads the committee told reporters in Bangalore.
Minister for Higher Education G Parameshwara, one of the members of the committee, asserted that under the Supreme Court order the State Government has powers to fix seat quota in private colleges.
He said to help poor students, the committee favoured the 75:25 ratio seats sharing formula.
Parameshwara said the Government has no say in the matter of fixing of fee structure and the committee appointed by the high court would go into the issue.
He however said, the Government would place its viewpoints on the fee structure before the committee.
Last year even though the Supreme Court ordered 50:50 ratio sharing of seats, the Government and managements arrived at a consensus on sharing 75:25 per cent quota.
Unlike last year, the private college managements will have no discretion on filling up their quota of seats and have to conduct a Common Entrance Test to select students.
The private managements have been insisting on 50:50 ratio formula.
