NDA to fall short of majority: NDTV exit poll
Monday, May 10 2004 23:04 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: An NDTV-Indian Express Exit Poll tonight predicted 230-250 seats for BJP and its allies, showing the ruling coalition short of majority by at least 22 seats in the Lok Sabha.

The poll, carried out by A C Nielsen and based on a sample size of 1,22,172 voters spread over 213 constituencies, gave Congress 190-205 seats and Left parties 40-50 besides 60-70 to others.

Out of the 182 seats, which went to polls in the final phase today (May 10, 2004), the exit poll gave BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) 60 seats, Congress 67 and others 55.

For the 10 seats in Haryana, the exit poll gave BJP two, a loss of eight seats, and Congress six and others two.

In Kerala, the survey predicted eight seats for the Congress-led UDF (United Democratic Front) and the remaining 12 for the LDF (Left Democratic Front).

Projecting a saffron surge in Madhya Pradesh, the poll gave 15 seats for BJP in Madhya Pradesh and two for Congress.

In Punjab, having 13 seats, the survey pegged Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-BJP at nine, a gain of six, and Congress at three and others one.

Reflecting a major setback for NDA (National Democratic Alliance) in Tamil Nadu, the poll gave BJP-led alliance eight seats and Congress 31 seats.

Of the 18 Lok Sabha constituencies, which went to polls in Uttar Pradesh today, it predicted six for BJP, two for Congress and ten for others, including SP and BSP.

In West Bengal, BJP-Trinamool alliance was given nine seats, Congress four and the Left Front the remaining 29.

In the national capital, the poll said Congress was likely to wrest four seats from BJP which was shown as retaining the remaining three.

Of the five seats in Uttaranchal, three was given to BJP and two to Congress while in Himachal Pradesh the two parties shared two seats each.
