Congress party will decide on PM candidate: Rahul
Monday, May 10 2004 16:32 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Congress candidate from Amethi, Rahul Gandhi today (May 10, 2004) said that the party's "governing body" would decide on the Prime Ministerial candidate if the Congress-led alliance reaches that situation.

"Senior members of the party would decide on the issue of Prime Minister. My personal view is that Congress party's governing body will look into the issue," he told reporters after casting his vote at Nirman Bhavan polling station.

He said he was "too small" a person in the party to be a Prime Ministerial candidate. "I feel that this is a wrong notion. You (media) blow up small things. I only want to serve the people of this country."

On asked whether Congress president and his mother Sonia Gandhi would be the Prime Ministerial candidate for the party-led alliance, Rahul said, "This is a wrong question for me to answer. I do not have any position in the party. I am only a possible Congress MP. So I cannot comment on this."

Flaying the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) for raking up his mother's foreign origin, Rahul said, "People who have nothing to do will rake up this issue. People will know on May 13."

When told that he was being looked forward to like his father, he was candid in his reply and said that he may look like his father but he was nowhere near him.

"He was a tall personality. I won't be able to achieve what he had achieved. I can only try," he said.
