CLP to elect the next Andhra Chief Minister today

Hyderabad: A day after receiving a massive landslide victory in Andhra Pradesh, the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) will be meeting today (May 12, 2004) to elect the new Chief Minister amid indications that Dr Y S Rajasekhar Reddy could be the choice for the top post.

Senior Congress leader Gulam Nabi Azad and Shivraj Patil will be supervising the meeting, party sources said.

The Congress got 185 seats on its own and along with its alliance partners TRS and Left parties its tally stood at 226 seats in the 294-member House.

Reddy, who won from Pulivendula constituency, was leader of the legislative party and the leader of the Opposition in the dissolved Assembly. He was earlier member of the Lok Sabha.
