Cong candidate Bhakta wins Andaman's lone LS seat

Port Blair: Congress heavyweight Manoranjan Bhakta won the lone Parliamentary seat in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, defeating his nearest rival Bishnupada Ray of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by a margin of 30,500 votes today (May 13, 2004).

While Bhakta, who was the Lok Sabha MP from the islands for seven consecutive terms between 1977 and 1999, polled 85,794 votes, Ray secured 55,294.
