BJP refuses to comment on early trends Thursday, May 13 2004 10:59 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today (May 13, 2004) refused to comment on the early trends from counting of votes for the Lok Sabha polls where the party and its allies were trailing in the tally behind the Congress and its allies.
"We don't want to talk on numbers at this moment as these are early trends. A clear picture can only be seen by the afternoon," BJP spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said.
He said concrete results from states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan as well as the Northeastern region were yet to come.
Asked whether the reversal for the party in the early trends indicated that it was a defeat for Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the party's stability plank, he said it was not true.
"No, not at all. Vajpayee's popularity is still intact. On the stability front, we are the party, which has given confidence on stability to the country," Naqvi added.
