BJP may not stake claim to form government
Thursday, May 13 2004 12:43 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Minutes ahead of a crucial meeting convened by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to discuss future course after stunning electoral reverses, some senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders indicated that the party should not attempt to form a Government.

Sushma Swaraj, a front rank party leader, did not see much chance for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to retain power saying, "I don't think there is any chance we should stake claim."

Another senior party leader Pramod Mahajan said if the BJP was not 200 per cent sure of reaching the 272 mark required for an absolute majority, "I don't think we will stake claim to power."
