DMK turns tables, says it may join Central Govt Thursday, May 13 2004 20:15 Hrs (IST)
Chennai:
Modifying his earlier stand that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) would not participate in any Government at the Centre, party president M Karunanidhi today (May 13, 2004) said that the DMK executive committee would meet on May 15 to decide whether to participate in a Congress-led Government at the Centre or not.
He said that the Congress president Sonia Gandhi and senior Congress leader Janardhan Reddy had spoken to him over telephone and requested the DMK to participate in a Congress-led Ministry at the Centre.
Karunanidhi said he had informed the Congress leaders that he could take a decision on joining the Union Ministry only after talking to senior DMK leaders and the party's executive committee members.
He said he would be leaving for New Delhi either on May 15 or 16.
Replying to a question, Karunanidhi said that he still believed that the DMK could work for the welfare of the State, even without its participation in the Ministry.
He said he would demand repeal of POTA soon after the new Ministry was sworn in at the Centre.
