New Delhi: Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee tonight (May 13, 2004) resigned after the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) defeat in Lok Sabha elections.

Vajpayee drove to Rashtrapati Bhavan after a Cabinet meeting and handed over his papers to President A P J Abdul Kalam.

Accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani, the Prime Minister was with the President for 15 minutes.

The President accepted his resignation and asked him to continue till alternative arrangements were made.
