Saturday, May 15 2004 19:12 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: As the political situation in Karnataka remained fluid, Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) leader H D Deve Gowda today (May 15, 2004) said the issue of formation of a secular Government in the State would be taken up with Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

"The matter is going to be thrashed out with Sonia Gandhi. There is no hurry. We are not going to support BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party)," in the State where Assembly poll has thrown up a hung House, he told reporters in New Delhi.

He said the JD-S legislature party is also meeting in Bangalore tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Vilasrao Deshmukh, in charge of party affairs in Karnataka, met Gowda here today seeking the support of JD-S, which has got 58 seats in 224-member House. Congress has 65 MLAs.

Later talking to reporters, Deshmukh said he impressed upon the JD-S leader the need for both parties to work together and form a secular Government.

Expressing that a coalition Government would be formed in the State by the two parties, he said Gowda is likely to meet Gandhi in a day or two.

He said the issue of Chief Minister or the type of the Government was not discussed.

JD-S spokesman Danish Ali said his party has decided not to have any truck directly or indirectly with BJP. "We cannot compromise with our ideological commitment. In spite of all humiliations by Congress' State Government, we will not allow BJP to take power in the State," he said.
