New Delhi: Indian Ambassador-at-Large in the US Bhisham Agnihotri has decided to resign following the defeat of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Government.

A non-resident Indian (NRI) businessman based in New York, Agnihotri, who was on an official visit to Mauritius, was in New Delhi and met outgoing Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to convey his decision to resign, PMO sources said.

Agnihotri, whose appointment had caused considerable stir among Foreign Service officials, would send in his papers once he reaches his headquarters, the sources said.
