Don't expect too much from new Govt: Chandrashekhar Monday, May 17 2004 14:13 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
Accusing the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government of pursuing dangerous economic policies, former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar has said high expectations should not be kept even from the Congress-led coalition as differences have emerged among the constituents of the new grouping on economic policies which could prove dangerous for the country.
"I consider the differences already cropping up over the economic policies in the new coalition even before it is concretised are unfortunate," Chandrashekhar, said in a BBC Hindi phone-in programme 'Aapki Baat BBC Ke Saath' broadcast last night (May 16, 2004).
"I favoured the formation of a secular Government at the Centre, but I did not know that so soon all those matters which proved disastrous for the previous Government would be repeated," the former Prime Minister said.
Stating, "It is not going to be easy", he said, "The beginning of the whole process shows not much changes from the past practices look possible. In such circumstances, much should not be expected. But this is democracy and efforts should be made to honour the people's verdict."
Though the new Government has not even been formed and any sort of a forecast would be hypothetical, "On my part I want the new coalition of secular parties to be stable and successful."
