Uma meets Kalam, opposes Sonia becoming PM Monday, May 17 2004 16:15 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
Voicing strong opposition to Congress president Sonia Gandhi becoming the Prime Minister, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Uma Bharti today (May 17, 2004) said the coalition's decision "is fraught with deceit and conspiracy to put a foreigner to take up the PM's post".
Bharti, who met President A P J Abdul Kalam this morning told reporters, "Videshi mool ke anari vyakti PM ban jaye (A naive person of foreign origin becoming Prime Minister) - is not leaving a good example for our future generations."
Observing that she has been talking to other party leaders not to allow such an "unfortunate" thing to happen, Bharti said, "I will declare the strategy to oppose Gandhi's Prime Ministership the moment she is called to take oath."
Maintaining that she has nothing personal against Gandhi, the Chief Minister said, "Mein videshi mool ke vyakti ko PM banne ke baat ko hundred per cent oppose karti hoon (I oppose 100 per cent a person of foreign origin becoming the Prime Minister)."
Bharti ruled out the possibility of her resignation as Chief Minister till the strategy was chalked out.
