UNMOGIP could help solve Kashmir issue: Pak Tuesday, May 18 2004 11:32 Hrs (IST)
United Nations:
Striking a jarring note in thaw in Indo-Pak relations, Pakistan today (May 17, 2004) suggested the United Nations Military Observer Group (UNMOGIP), which New Delhi does not recognise, could help solve the Kashmir issue.
Addressing the United Nations Security Council, Pakistan's Foreign Minister Khurshid M Kasuri said the world body's mission in Jammu and Kashmir could help in "promoting a just and peaceful resolution" of the issue.
He was referring to the United Nations Military Observer Group in India (UNMOGIP), which New Delhi does not recognise now. The group was established to monitor the ceasefire along the Line of Control.
India and Pakistan, he said, have agreed to seek a mutually satisfactory solution to Kashmir issue.
"Such a solution, to be just and sustainable, will need to take into account the aspirations of the people. UNMOGIP can help in promoting a just and peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute," he said.
Kasuri was addressing the Council meeting organised to discuss UN peacekeeping operations.
