Sonia offered to make way following Sangh protest
Tuesday, May 18 2004 09:14 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: As the Sangh Parivar mounted an offensive against Congress president Sonia Gandhi occupying Prime Ministership because of her foreign origin, she today (May 17, 2004) offered to make way for some other Congressman.

Gandhi, who had an unscheduled meeting with the allies this evening, conveyed to them that she did not want to be an embarrassment for the allies in view of opposition to her becoming the Prime Minister from some quarters, sources in the Congress-led alliance said.

She told them that she was prepared to make way for some other Congressman if it suits the allies.

But the allies told her in one word that there was no way she could buckle under the pressure from the Sangh Parivar on the issue.
