K'taka Governor concerned over delay in forming Govt Wednesday, May 19 2004 16:07 Hrs (IST)
Bangalore:
Karnataka Governor T N Chaturvedi is concerned over delay in formation of Government in the State, where Assembly elections have thrown up a fractured verdict, said Janata Dal-United (JD-U) State unit president B Somashekar, who met him today (May 19, 2004).
"He (the Governor) is also concerned about the delay in Government formation," Somashekar told reporters to a pointed question after an informal meeting at the Raj Bhavan.
Even a week after the results were known, there are no firm signs as to when the new Government would come into being.
In a three-way ruling, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the single largest party with 79 seats in the 224-member House (its ally JD-U secured five), followed by the Congress 65 and JD-S of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda 58.
Though the Congress and the JD-S have announced that they would come together to form the Government, there isn't much headway regarding modalities, nature and composition of the coalition Government.
JD-S on Sunday (May 16, 2004) authorised Devegowda to discuss the modalities with Congress president Sonia Gandhi but the process is getting delayed, apparently because the Congress Central leadership is busy forming a Government led by it at the Centre.
That the bargaining between the Congress and the JD-S is revolving around the Chief Ministership is no secret. Both want the top post go to their nominee, with the Congress arguing that since they have secured more number of seats, it should go to it.
