Thursday, May 20 2004 09:15 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Privatisation should not be followed "blindly" and fruits of economic reforms should reach the poorest of the poor, Prime Minister-designate Dr Manmohan Singh has said.

"We are not against privatisation, but we are also not saying that everything can be solved by privatisation. We have said very clearly that we do not believe in the ideology of privatisation which has to be followed blindly," Singh told 'Aaj Tak'.

On fluctuations in the stock market in the past two days, he said the regulatory authorities would probe and find out who is responsible, according to a press release issued by the channel.

Asked whether the Government would intervene in this issue, Singh said the SEBI should intervene to find out the reasons and take appropriate corrective actions.

Observing his Government would focus on areas of industrial production, education, health and agriculture among others, Singh was quoted as saying, "The reforms should reach the poorest of the poor, then only will they carry weight."
