Laloo puts forth his 'suggestions' before Congress Friday, May 21 2004 18:45 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
Amid serious efforts by Congress to bring together its allies, RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal) supremo Laloo Prasad Yadav today (May 21) put forth "certain sensitive suggestions" for joining the coalition Government headed by Manmohan Singh.
Soon after his return from Patna, Yadav met senior Congress leaders Arjun Singh, R K Dhawan and Kapil Sibal this afternoon and put forth his party's stand.
The meeting assumes importance in the wake of Yadav calling on other partners in United Progressive Alliance (UPA), including NCP (Nationalist Congress Party) chief Sharad Pawar, who is also yet to take a decision on joining the Government.
When contacted, Sibal told reporters, "Yadav is participating in the process for formation of a Congress-led alliance Government and has given certain suggestions which would be conveyed to party president Sonia Gandhi for consideration."
Sibal said the suggestions were "sensitive to Government formation process", but declined to term them as conditions from Laloo Yadav for his party's participation in the Government.
Yadav had yesterday (May 20) reminded Congress of its strength in the hung Lok Sabha and put across the message that RJD with 21 MPs cannot be ignored in Government formation.
"This is to be a Congress-led ministry in which the Congress has only 145 MPs and the rest belong to allies. Congress cannot do anything on its own," he had told reporters in Patna on his arrival from New Delhi.
Yadav, who was reported to have left Delhi in a huff after a two-hour meeting of RJD parliamentary party, had denied he was eyeing the home portfolio and said he was more
concerned about Bihar getting a financial package and an assurance that it will be implemented within a time-frame.
