Saturday, May 22 2004 09:16 Hrs (IST)

Washington: India would be able to attain even greater heights of economic prosperity and growth under the "able guidance" of Prime Minister-designate Manmohan Singh, Democratic Senator and co-chair of the India Caucus in the US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton has said.

Delivering the keynote address at the Asia Society's annual dinner to celebrate Indo-American Relations, Hillary congratulated Singh on his appointment as Prime Minister and also the Indian voters on their spectacular demonstration of the power of their votes.

"The smooth transition of power from the (Atal Bihari) Vajpayee Government to the one led by the Congress and its allies," she said, indicated the sound democratic traditions of India.

Recalling her visit to India, she hoped that Indo-American relations would continue to grow in several fields, including military, economic and political areas.

The gala black tie dinner to fund Asia Society's education programmes was attended by 400-450 of Washington's elite, including senior officials of the Administration, the Asian diplomatic Corps, including current Charge at the Indian Embassy Rakesh Sood, and members of Congress.
