Politicking continues as Cong leaders meet Sonia
Saturday, May 22 2004 13:37 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: After marathon rounds of meetings with Prime Minister-designate Manmohan Singh for Government formation, there seems to be no respite for Congress president Sonia Gandhi who is playing a pivotal role to put in place a Congress-led coalition Government at the Centre.

Last minute politicking in the run up to the swearing-in ceremony later this evening (May 22, 2004) is still on with Congress leaders visiting 10, Janpath, the residence of Gandhi.

Mani Shankar Iyer, who is expected to find a berth in the Union Cabinet, followed by Sonia's trusted lieutenant Ambika Soni, another aspirant for a cabinet post, met her this morning.

Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi, whose name is also circulating as a probable minister, too dropped in for a while. He was followed by Ghulam Nabi Azad, the main architect of the spectacular victory of the party in Andhra Pradesh who is expected to get a "prized" portfolio in the Cabinet.

A couple of party hopefuls, elected to the 14th Lok Sabha, were also said to be lobbying hard for the last minute inclusion in the Council of Ministers list.

With the dust appearing to settle down outside the residence of the Congress president with the process for Government formation almost coming to an end, the focus is likely to shift to 19, Safdarjung Road, the Reisdence of the Singhs.
