POTA is to tackle terror, don’t scrap it: BJP to Govt
Monday, May 24 2004 19:44 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today (May 24, 2004) opposed any move by the Congress-led coalition Government to scrap the anti-terror law Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) and hoped that the Centre would not take a soft line on tackling terrorism.

"POTA is for checking terrorism and to oppose it in any form is not proper. Even though there is always a scope for misuse of POTA, a law is needed to tackle this menace," BJP spokesman Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told reporters in New Delhi.

Condemning the militant attack on the Jammu-Srinagar highway in which several security personnel were killed yesterday, Naqvi said, "We hope the new Government at the Centre would have a clear policy on tackling terrorism and not take a soft line on it."
