Tuesday, May 25 2004 19:44 Hrs (IST)

Kerala Chief Minister A K Antony
New Delhi: Kerala Chief Minister A K Antony today (May 25, 2004) indicated that he had offered to Congress President Sonia Gandhi to step down in the wake of party's rout in the Lok Sabha polls in the State.

Antony met Gandhi and told her that any decision taken by the High Command was acceptable to him.

"It is a devastating defeat. Any decision by the High Command on the corrective measures to be taken in the wake of this disaster is acceptable to me," Antony said after his first meeting with Gandhi since the announcement of Lok Sabha poll results.

Asked by reporters whether he had offered to step down taking moral responsibility for the defeat, Antony said, "I have told you in Malayalam, not in Sanskrit. Any decision of the High Command is acceptable to me. This includes all interpretations."
