Gandhinagar: Calling for Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's resignation in the wake of the electoral reverses suffered by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Lok Sabha polls, Opposition Congress in the Legislative Assembly today (May 25, 2004) demanded registration of a case of "human killing" against him.

An upbeat Congress, bolstered by its performance in the recent polls, made a scathing attack on Modi and said it would make a representation to the President and Prime Minister for his ouster.

Initiating the discussion on State Budget, leader of Opposition Amarsinh Chaudhary asked for Modi's resignation, alleging that the Chief Minister had "misled" people in the name of terrorism.

He said, "The electoral reverses suffered by BJP clearly showed that Modi did not know how to rule", adding if there is an iota of compassion left in him, he should step down.

In an obvious reference to post-Godhra communal riots, Chaudhary said a case of "human killing" should be registered against Modi.

Chaudhary, however, clarified that Congress was not demanding imposition of Article 356.

Accusing Modi of indulging in "politics of contempt", the Congress leader said it was the first time in the State that farmer's interest had been totally "ignored", which led to the poll reverses.

Chaudhary severely criticised the Modi Government for "squandering" crores of Rupees in "extravagant" celebrations, including Navratri and kite festival.
