Mulayam quits LS seat to remain as UP Chief Minister Tuesday, May 25 2004 21:59 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
Samajwadi Party president and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, who was elected from Mainpuri in just-ended Parliamentary polls, today (May 25, 2004) quit his Lok Sabha seat.
Yadav had sent in his resignation to the Lok Sabha secretary general, party sources said.
Yadav had announced yesterday he would resign from his Lok Sabha seat to remain as Chief Minister.
"Under the present circumstances, I am resigning from the Lok Sabha and will continue to serve the State as Chief Minister," Yadav had told a public meeting in his Lok Sabha constituency.
Yadav represents Gunnaur in the State Assembly.
The Samajwadi Party-Rashtriya Janata Dal (RLD) combine bagged 40 seats in the recent Lok Sabha polls with SP securing 37, emerging the biggest party in Uttar Pradesh and the fourth largest in the Lok Sabha.
Despite strong advocacy by Left leaders, especially Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) veteran Harkishan Singh Surjeet, the Samajwadi Party's plans to participate in the Congress-led coalition did not materialise.
