Gowda meets Sonia; says he's not power hungry Wednesday, May 26 2004 17:06 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) president and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda today (May 26, 2004) held yet another round of talks with Congress president Sonia Gandhi on the formation of a coalition Government in Karnataka.
Emerging from a 20-minute parleys with Gandhi, Gowda told reporters a clear picture on the Government formation would emerge in a "day or two".
"Whether it is a Maharashtra model or a Jammu and Kashmir, or the portfolios are not the issues. The issue is how to stop the growth of BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party). The BJP has grown in this elections in the State," Gowda said.
This was his fourth meeting with Gandhi after the Assembly elections threw a hung House.
Asserting that he was "not power hungry", the former Prime Minister said the basic issue was how to provide a better governance.
Gowda said that JD-S legislature party had discussed various issues of Government formation in the State and the party MLAs said there should be no truck with BJP.
Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Dharm Singh was expected in New Delhi for discussions with Gandhi, he said.
Singh had said in Bangalore yesterday the Congress-JD-S coalition Government would be in place by May 27.
Widely tipped as the Chief Ministerial candidate to head the Congress-led coalition Ministry in the State, Singh, during an informal chat with the press, defended the decision of the party to form the Government with JD-S support to prevent "communal forces from coming to power".
