'Bharti's campaign forced Sonia to decline PM post' Wednesday, May 26 2004 14:34 Hrs (IST)
Indore:
Claiming that his sister's campaign compelled Sonia Gandhi to decline the post of Prime Minister, brother of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Uma Bharti, Swami Prasad Lodhi today (May 26, 2004), however, said the Congress president has become "Yashasvi" (glorified) by taking the step.
Talking to reporters at meet-the-press programme organised by Indore Press Club, Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP's) Lodhi, when asked to comment on Gandhi's "sacrifice by declining the Prime Minister's post", said she has "become 'yashasvi' by declining the PM's post and it will help Congress a lot".
However, when asked whether he supported Bharti's campaign against Gandhi's foreign origin, Lodhi said he backed her moves, which "ultimately forced Gandhi to decline the post of Prime Minister".
"Whatever has happened is good for the country and its people. Gandhi's decision has prevented unruly situation in the country," he added.
He also said that all "symbols of slavery - like places still known by their English names - should be changed to their original names."
Alleging that bureaucrats, especially some in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), have minted money to the tune of crores of Rupees during the time of Digvijay Singh Government in the State, he said some of them have even managed to get the plump postings in BJP rule in the State.
He said he would discuss the issue with Bharti and would probably submit a list of such tainted officers and would also launch a campaign against them.
