French President Chirac invites PM to Paris Wednesday, May 26 2004 18:29 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
Joining leaders from the US, Britain and other countries, French President Jacques Chirac has congratulated Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on his assumption of office and invited him to visit Paris.
In a message to the Prime Minister, Chirac said the recent elections demonstrated the extraordinary strength of the Indian democracy. They also reflected the deep attachment of the Indian people for secular values, which France particularly cherished.
He said the promotion of a balanced international order respecting Human Rights, strengthening the dialogue between cultures and supporting an equitable sustainable development were some of the common objectives.
"In these uncertain times for the international community, the need for France and India to combine efforts in this direction is more relevant than ever," Chirac said.
Observing that the two countries have developed a steady partnership in political, economic, cultural and strategic fields, he assured Singh of his resolve to work with the Indian leader towards strengthening it.
"In this regard, I would be happy to welcome you in Paris as soon as your schedule permits," Chirac said while wishing Singh success in his new assignment.
Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi in a message to her Indian counterpart K Natwar Singh said both countries have a significant role to play in shaping the future of Asia and beyond.
