Cong-JDS tie-up in K'taka an unholy alliance: BJP Friday, May 28 2004 18:36 Hrs (IST)
Bangalore:
Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP's) Karnataka unit today (May 28, 2004) termed the Congress-Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) Government in the State as an "unholy alliance" that has "betrayed" the verdict of the electorate, but said it would play a constructive role as the Opposition.
"We will play the role of a constructive Opposition," State BJP president H N Ananth Kumar told reporters in Bangalore after the new Government took charge.
Stating that former Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna had categorically said people had rejected the Congress Government, he said, "Congress is making a backdoor entry to occupy power."
Kumar said the BJP-JD-U alliance had emerged as the single largest group in the State, doubling its seats in the Assembly since the last elections and trebling in the Lok Sabha strength. "We adopted a wait and watch approach," he said, when asked about BJP's moves towards JD-S on Government formation.
Kumar said JD-S and Congress were on a "suicidal mode" with the alliance, but declined to specify a time frame, when asked whether early elections were on the anvil because of the new coalition.
"Will the JD-S implement the demands it made before the elections like inquiry into the land dealings of the previous Government or seeking a ban on online lottery?" he asked.
Asked whether BJP president Venkaiah Naidu would be re-nominated from the State to the Rajya Sabha, Kumar said, "The Central Parliamentary Board will decide on this."
