Militants attack Mirawaiz's house; kin shot at Saturday, May 29 2004 22:56 Hrs (IST)
Srinagar:
In a bid to derail the ongoing dialogue process between the Centre and Hurriyat Conference led by Abbas Ansari, militants opposed to the talks today (May 29, 2004) tossed a grenade on the residence of Hurriyat founder chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and shot at and critically wounded his kin inside a mosque in the city.
In the first attack on Mirwaiz, who participated in the talks, unidentified militants hurled a grenade on his heavily-guarded residence at the posh Nigeen locality on the outskirts of the city at 16:10 hours (IST), official sources said.
The grenade landed in the compound of Mirwaiz's house and exploded with a big bang without causing any harm. However, some window-panes of the three-storied house were smashed under the impact of the explosion, they said.
Mirwaiz was not present in the house at the time of the attack, but his mother and wife who were present said the explosion rocked the house and smashed several window-panes.
