Bonhomie in AP House on Day One of new Assembly Monday, May 31 2004 14:09 Hrs (IST)
Hyderabad:
It was a riot of colours at the inaugural session of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly that saw reversal of roles for the two major parties with the upbeat Congress members occupying treasury benches, after a decade-long gap, and TDP (Telugu Desam Party) members sitting in the Opposition.
Putting the poll-related bitterness firmly behind them, the newly elected members belonging to different parties greeted each other warmly as an air of bonhomie pervaded the House.
Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy, who steered Congress to a stupendous victory in the recent elections, was the cynosure of all eyes as he walked across to the Opposition
benches and shook hands with TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu, whose TDP was defeated at the hustings.
On the opening day of the short session, the members were administered the oath by the pro-tem speaker P Sambasiva Raju.
Reddy was the first to take oath in the name of God. He was followed by Naidu who is now the leader of the Opposition after being the longest serving Chief Minister of the State. Later, the Ministers and other members were administered the oath under Article 188 of the Constitution.
The House wore a colourful look with members turning up for the oath-taking ceremony attired in dresses that reflected their respective party colours.
While Congress members turned up in whites with tricolour scarves around their necks, the TDP legislators were wearing yellow shirts and CPI (Communist Party of India) and CPM (Communist Party of India-Marxist) members were attired in Red.
There was also a fair sprinkle of pink, the colour of Telangana Rashtriya Samithi (TRS), which has 26 members.
