Shahrukh Khan pays 'courtesy visit' to Sonia Gandhi
Monday, May 31 2004 11:06 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Bollywood's best bet Shahrukh Khan today (May 30, 2004) met Congress president Sonia Gandhi but said he did not intend to join politics nor did she ask him to campaign for the party in next Assembly polls.

"It has nothing to do with any politics. It was a courtesy call," Khan said after a 30-minute meeting with Gandhi at her residence 10-Janpath.

Congress Rajya Sabha MP Rajiv Shukla, who accompanied Shahrukh to the meeting with Gandhi, said that the film star invited Congress chief and her family members to watch his latest movie "Main Hoo Naa" at Mavalankar Auditorium.

Gandhi and her family members including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka and her husband Robert Vadra accepted the invitation, Shukla said.

Though Congress chief Gandhi did not go, her son Rahul Gandhi and daughter Priyanka and her husband Robert Vadra watched 'Main Hoon Naa'. Priyanka told reporters waiting outside the Mahadev auditorium that she was a movie buff.

Describing Gandhi as a "wonderful lady", Khan said the Manmohan Singh was doing the job of running the country "wonderfully".

Replying to a question, the actor said, "I have no knowledge of politics. I am very deeply involved in making films. I really have no knowledge of politics and there is no intention to join politics."

Khan said that since he had come to Delhi for the shoot of a film at Shanti Path, "I just wanted to meet her because I think she is a wonderful lady. And I come quite often. You people are standing outside for the first time."

Asked if Gandhi had asked him to campaign in coming Assembly elections, he said, "They have never asked me to do it." When pointed out that even Govinda, another Bollywood star, had spoken about not wanting to join politics before he actually did it, Khan said, "I think his Govinda is a gifted person and his knowledge of life, work and politics is better than mine and he's seen the world a little closer than I have."
