Indian Railways to receive Computerworld Honour Tuesday, June 1 2004 22:22 Hrs (IST)
Washington:
Indian Railways will receive the prestigious Computer World Honour 2004 for the computerized "Unreserved Ticketing System" (UTS) that has improved customers' travelling experience and provided operational efficiency for the world's second-largest rail network.
The UTS introduced by Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) of India will be honoured on June 7 at a gala function here as one of the five organisations selected from around the globe as finalists for the 2004 Computerworld Honour 21st Century Achievement Award in the transportation category.
The CRIS case study of UTS has already become part of the Computerworld Honours Collection at ceremonies in San Francisco's City Hall in April, when the 2004 Collection was formally presented.
The overview of this case study reads: "To improve customer satisfaction, revenue generation, accounting and reporting capabilities and reduce fraud, Indian Railways, the world's second-largest railway carrying 11 million passengers daily, created the Unreserved Ticketing System."
"This system has improved the travelling experience for customers while providing Indian Railways with significant operational efficiencies and management capabilities."
"CRIS is using Information Technology to take great strides toward remarkable social achievement in transportation," said Daniel Morrow, Executive Board Director, Computerworld Honour Programme.
