Two of Indian-origin in US 'drug kingpins' list Wednesday, June 2 2004 12:37 Hrs (IST)
Washington:
Two persons of Indian origin are among the list of foreign individuals and entities the US President George W Bush has designated as 'Foreign Narcotics Kingpins' to face special sanctions.
Iqbal Mirchi - an Indian national and Leebert Ramcharan - a person of Indian-origin from Jamaica are named under the 1999 Drug Kingpin Act aimed at curbing narcotic trafficking.
The others in the list are: Arellano Flex Organization, Eduardo Ramon Arellano Felix, Francisco Javier Arellano Felix, Carillo Fuentes Organization, Armando Valencia Cornelio (all from Mexico), Norris Nembhard (Jamaica), Fernando Melciades Zevallos Gonzales (Peru), and Bashir Noorzai (Afghanistan).
"This action underscores the President's determination to do everything possible to pursue drug traffickers, undermine their operations and end suffering that trade in illicit drugs inflicts on Americans and people around the world, as well as preventing drug traffickers from supporting terrorists," the White House said in a statement.
The initial list of drug kingpins was released in June 2000 and names released yesterday are additions to that. The action brings the total number of individuals and entities designated under the Kingpin Act to 48.
The Act targets prominent foreign drug traffickers, their operations and operatives worldwide, denying them access to the US financial system and all trade and transactions involving US companies and individuals. It does not target countries in which these foreign individuals and entities are operating or the Governments of such countries.
