Fake reports on Siachen were superiors' instructions Thursday, June 3 2004 12:08 Hrs (IST)
Jodhpur:
A Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) today (June 3, 2004) told the Military Court recording summary evidence in the Siachen fake killing case that he filed false reports of tension along the Line of Control (LoC) on instructions of his Commanding Officer Major Surinder Singh.
"I sent false reports of tension on LoC in August last year because you told me to do so," Nayab Subedar P B Thapa said during his cross-examination by Maj. Singh.
"I complied with your orders because I was afraid of you," he said.
Earlier, Thapa narrated the sequence of events of submission of false reports, based on which an encounter was allegedly staged and video graphed by Maj. Singh.
Thapa replied in the affirmative when asked if he was aware of the consequences of filing false reports.
Asked by Maj. Singh whether Thapa had spoken by the phone with Battalion Commander Col. K D Singh during the said period the JCO replied in the negative.
Asked if he had seen the video clips of the alleged fake encounter showing a destroyed enemy bunker and dead Pakistani soldiers, Thapa said he had not seen it.
The JCO was also grilled by Maj. Singh over technical details like distance between different strategic points.
The Military Court is recording summary evidence in the "fake" killing case as a follow up of a court of inquiry, which held Col. Singh and Maj. R Lamba responsible for administrative lapses and recommended disciplinary action against Maj. Singh for making exaggerated claims.
